The IAMDV8 auditions were frankly death-by-talent. From the start the standard was set high by Santi Santego who was the first to break the ice. Bearing in mind that these were open auditions, the judges as well as other artists were all sat watching in the same room.

Despite this, none of those who came to audition showed any sign of stage fright. The confidence levels literally oozed from each and every act. Each one claimed the stage in their individual ways which will surely make the judges decision pretty difficult.

Variety is definitely one of the IAMDV8’s unique selling points. Not only did singers and guitarists apply, poets, rappers and dancers were all in the mix. We had performances from the likes of Kane who is a singer/songwriter and producer, Diamond who is a rapper, singer and dancer as well as The Goods who are an Indie, R’n’B, Rock influenced rapping and singing quartet. So it’s pretty clear that many of the acts are more than just artists but are multi-faceted with bags of extra skills as well as talent.

Despite the shortage in ladies ratio-wise, the few that made an appearance each had applaudable gifts. I managed to draw one of them to the press room for a quick chat. Her name is Sade Joseph and she’s one of the poets whose audition left the room in silence as the audience literally hung off her every word.

The 19-year-old from Stratford definitely had what I would call the Susan-Boyle-Shock-Factor. She told me how she’s been writing for a few years but only got stuck into the world of spoken word two months ago. Brought into the auditions by her mate Tim who is involved with DV8, she saw an opportunity to inspire others as well as boost her confidence in her art. Sade herself is inspired by those she looks up to such as The Striver’s Row as well as numerous Def Jam poets.

Speaking of inspiration, one of the things that you could not miss at the auditions was the atmosphere of support. That’s what sets this event apart from the others. There was no X-Factor slating or booing from any of the performers. When each act came off stage, they were met with encouragement and handshakes, such a wonderful thing to have at such an event. I even struggled getting a hold of some of them as they were so engrossed in conversing about each others art and networking!

If this is the epic standard of just the auditions, I daren’t think how much more each act will bring to the actual event. So I’d like to take this time to tell the judges one thing, best of luck as none of these acts have made your job easy!

CALLING ALL MUSIC PRODUCERS

The DV8 events team is looking for new fresh beats for our next big event, IAMDV8 at Stratford Circus on July 4^th 2013.

BRING YOUR BEST BEAT FOR THE BATTLE

Before the main event we will be holding an Open Mic Session with exclusive beats from select producers. Have you got that fire we are looking for? If so submit your beats now.

Beat should last between 3 – 3 ½ minutes long.

We are looking for variety as not everyone will have the same style of performing

We are aiming to have between 20 to 30 different beats in total so send in as many as you want for a chance to have your beat used.

So if you think that your beat is the one for an MC to perform to live please send us your best masterpiece as an MP3 or your Soundcloud. The beat that is used by the winning performer of the Open Mic Session will receive a shout out on our website and social media websites to help with your promotion and have the chance to meet with industry professionals.

CAN YOU MAKE THE SOUNDTRACK FOR OUR IAMDV8 TRAILER?

What we are looking for is a beat that best suits the vibe of the event we are going for. We need a hyped up beat that grabs the attention of the audience but that doesn’t overpower the person speaking in the video.

On behalf of the Eastside Stories events team, I would like to thank you for helping to make IAMDV8 a success.

Behind every great show you’ll be sure to find an amazing team. Everyone from the DV8 and Stratford staff, Genesis security, Stuart Howitt Production, stage managers (high praise to Natalie Maddix and Sharon Ayi), Nickie Wilson at Circle33, workshop leaders, stall holders, Mikis & Riz from FusionTV, face painters, AAK gallery team, DV8 apprentices, set designer Jodie Diaz, DJs Joss Ryan, Aries and Sincere and the ushers brought something special to the mix. The packed house was treated to impressive performances on the main stage, as well as in Circus 2 (90’s Babies in the house!) and on the #RateMePlz and One Agenda stage.

It was also great to have DV8 Sussex representing for the first time. It was particularly moving to see one of their students return to the stage, after a minor set back, to deliver an incredible solo performance.

IAMDV8 was a real coming of age for my learners who took on the difficult challenge of imagining the festival and bringing the vision to life. In the meantime, your feedback would be most welcome.

We had our final rehearsals down at the Outset Centre on Friday 29th June and I must say it was a day to remember for sure!

We had amazing performances from Luciee, Deadly, SG, Festa, MilkyTown, Jerusha, Showa Sho, Jordan King, Timeless and Tru Starz’ very own- Showerz and Talent. It was a creative explosion down at the Outset and then to top it off we had performances from Dv8’s homegrown talent- Music and Performance, Music Production and Business Level 1, Music Production and Business Level 2, Music Industry Project Level 2 and Fashion!

The rehearsals made us realise that we really don’t have long until it’s showtime, so we are back in class making sure that the public know that I AM DV8 is ONLY place to be on Saturday 7th July. Be there!

We all appreciate the promotion the Dv8 family has been doing so far! We want to help ‘motiv8’ everyone to up their game even more, so we have a little competition for you!

All you have to do is get 8 of your friends to take a picture holding the Dv8 flyer. Then email the 8 pictures saying “I Motiv8 Dv8” to Iamdv8event@gmail.com

We will upload the best pictures to our website. Our team will then select the best/craziest 8 pictures - the winner will be awarded with £8 on the night when you give in your tickets.

Girl about town Remel London has always been a good friend of IAMDV8. This summer, she has announced a new partnership between IAMDV8 and #RateMePlz.

The Link Up TV presenter is known for her young, fun, loud and unique style of presenting. Already a well-respected face on the UK urban scene, she has developed a huge fan base and will be bringing plenty of energy to our daytime open mic session.

“I am 100% up for bringing #RateMePlz to IAMDV8. It’s great promo for me and it’ll be fun for the show as well,” said Remel, who took part in our last showcase as a host for Man Can’t Chat To Me quiz show. “I’ve noted the date down in my diary and I’m in!”

Remel London recently launched #RateMePlz as an event for young and talented people. It was a great way for those interested in music, fashion, production, hosting to network. We are honoured that Remel is supporting us at our second festival; which is taking place on Sat, July 7^th at Stratford Circus.

Artist Of The Week! (Woodzy)

This weeks artist of the week is Woodzy! He is an aspiring artist and he is also extremely talented. Read on to find out what inspires him and other great facts about him!

What inspires you to do music?

Music is my life. The first thing I do when I wake and the last thing I do before I go to bed is listen to music. My dream is to do music as a living as it’s what I involve my whole life around. I’m either listening to music, writing it or performing. I think being able to express yourself through music is a great thing. The fact someone you have never met before can hear what you’re saying and relate to how you were feeling at the time you wrote it is an amazing thing.

Which artist do you feel you connect to the most musically/lyrically?

The main artists I relate to are - Chip, Drake and Ed Sheeran. Especially Ed Sheeran as I feel everything he writes from the heart.

What is you favorite genre of music?

My favourite genre of music would have to be Hip-hop and Rap music. As well as that I also love acoustic music and I like to apply that feel to my own music. I’m open to all genres, as long as the person has talent I can listen and respect it.

What are you going to bring to I Am DV8?

I’m going to bring a performance full of energy and confidence. I hope to get the crowd singing along and liking the feel of the track, as I will be performing my debut single “Time to Shine” which will be out sometime in July.

NATALIE MADDIX INVITES YOU TO A FEW FESTIVALS

Seeing as you’ll be finishing your studies soon, I figured you’d want to get a head start on planning a fun-filled summer! These festivals and shows are all going to be raging! They are all pretty much free apart from a booking fee maybe. Check ‘em out and book some tickets.

This is the one I’m doing most work on. If you wanna dance I think the Africa Stage in East London is your best bet. But for a more picnicky chilled day, the Asia Stage in Battersea Park is going to be nice too. You can book up to 4 tickets per person. Click here

The orchestra meets urban music event was a huge success at the Barbican earlier in the year. As the Olympics approaches, Skepta, Ms Dynamite, Devlin and Fazer will be eastbound to share this unique musical experience with the people. Free tickets are scarce so hurry! Click here

Artist Of The Week: Luciee Closier

I AM DV8 is all about celebrating talent and here is our artist of the week - Luciee Closier. She is an up and coming singer from Essex with an amazing voice. She blew us away at the auditions and you will definitely be hearing more from after our festival.

What inspires you to do music?
I have always had a passion for music and performing since the age of 3. Music is my life

Which artist do you feel you connect to the most musically/lyrically?
I feel I connect with Avril Lavigne musically and Taylor swift musically.

What is you favourite genre of music?
I enjoy all sorts of music from different eras; I like indie and American punk pop.

What are you going to bring to I Am DV8?
Originality, confidence and perform to the best of my ability. I’m looking forward to supporting all the other acts too.
